Editorial: George Bush and Double Standards
I tend to stay away from political commentary on this blog, but I couldn’t resist talking about the gross double standards of President George Bush’s latest remark.
President Bush has stated that the Russian attack on the former providence of Georgia is “unacceptable.” Vice-President Dick Cheyney stated that continued attacks will hurt the relationship between the US and Russia. Where do these guys come off?
The United States is continuing an offensive action in Iraq that was condemned by the UN. It was an invasion of a sovereign nation and a severe breech of the typical U.S. diplomacy used with foreign powers. I’m not a political expert here, but it seems like the President has a gross double standard here. He did the same thing to Iraq that Russia is doing now to Georgia, and he has the audacity to condemn the action? One would think that he would stand behind the action if he were consistent in his foreign policy. But I guess not.

The foreign policy here is “protect democracy”. Iraq was a threat to democracy; Russia attacked a democracy.
In that light, do you really see a moral equivalence between the US’s removal of a muderous leader who defied the UN and wanted the world to believe he had and would use WMD against the US and Israel; and Russia’s invasion of a soveriegn democracy that is trying to reclaim provinces within its legal borders?
Well, you might see them as equivalent if defending democracy is just Bush’s cover for taking over the world.
In my opinion, Bush was enforcing UN resolutions that the UN was unwilling to enforce… resolutions that we helped put in place under Bush Sr., and removing Saddam made the world a safer place. On the other hand, Russia has shown signs that it misses the glory days of being under the USSR, and allowing Russia to put down Georgia for preventing cecession will make the world more dangerous.
Unfortunately, the UN has ZERO legitimacy (especially in light of our Constitution)…and Constitutionally speaking, what other justification did the U.S. have for invading Iraq?
Just a little hint…zero reasons.
Also note that our goal(s) for Iraq have been ill-defined and very fluid…this went from the U.S. saying Al Queda was funded by Iraq to WMD’s being in Iraq (that’s how we finally “justified” the aggression) to Operation Iraqui Freedom.
Finally…our aggression against Iraq still an undeclared war.
So really, Russia has exactly the same number of valid justifications as our government had for invading Iraq…NONE.
Lasly…if our job is to police the world, and Russia is a “danger”…it looks like they’re next on our invasion list…there ought to be something incredibly frightening to believers in the U.S.: Our religious fervor about military exploits…it’s not just liberals that see the state as Messianic…while they see salvation as being bequeathed via governmental handouts conservatives see salvation via our military exploits.
Both are religious in nature…and both are wrong. So yes, I would agree with Cory on this one. Bush is simply taking forgranted a foreign policy of American Exceptionalism…you know, everyone do as we say while we operate by a different standard.
THERE IS NO DEMOCRACY IN GEOGIA, THE OPPOSTION LEADER IS IN JAIL!! SO THOSE OF YOU WITH HALF A BRAIN THINK AGAIN. BUSH WAR ON IRAQ WAS CONDEMNED BY THE UN NOT APPLOUDED.
