What are Doctrinal Divisions Really About?

Posted by Cory Tucholski on December 28, 2008

Doctrinal divisions that permeate the church so profusely, at their core, aren’t about what Scripture says. Only the King James Version Onlyists dispute what Scripture says. We’ve taken them, and the famous NIV Quiz, on before. The divisions are over what Scripture means.

Case in point is the recent informal blog debate between Matthew Bellisario and the pseudonymous “TurretinFan.” The crux of the debate is whose interpretation of Romans 14 is correct–Mr. Bellisario, or TF. Mr. Bellisario insists, and correctly I believe, that Romans 14 is aimed at the Judaizers of Paul’s day who would impose the Law on Christians. Further, such a passage doesn’t remove from the Church the authority to impose new holy days and bind Christians to obeying them.

I agree with Mr. Bellisario’s assessment of the passage. I agree that it is aimed at the Judaizers of Paul’s day and I agree that it doesn’t preclude the Church from imposing holy days upon Christians.

However, the imposition of new holy days goes against the spirit of the passage, and indeed the spirit of the Gospel. Jesus died and rose again to free us from the legalism of the Jewish Law. This is TF’s primary point. However, Mr. Bellisario doesn’t see the Catholic Church as imposing a new legalism on Christians. This is why the two are talking past each other–Mr. Bellisario is unable to empathize with TF’s position. Mr. Bellisario sees the Catholic Church as the sole infallible authority for determining Christian morality and living, rather than giving Scripture that place.

So, what is my opinion of Romans 14? I believe that it applies to all holy days, new or old. As TF points out, Scripture is like a fine gem with many facets. It is important to look at all opinions, past and present, to get a feel for something that you might miss. I also agree with Mr. Bellisario that Romans 14 doesn’t preclude the addition of new holy days, however there is no authority anywhere in Scripture that confers the power to bind Christians under threat of mortal sin to observe these new holy days.

Does that mean that we are free of the Sabbath day? By no means. As TF reminds us, the Sabbath goes back to creation and is therefore binding on all people. The obligation to reserve a day of worship for God alone was not erased by the cross, since it predates the Law. The Cross is the end of the Law.

While I agree that new holy days aren’t out of the realm of the church’s authority, binding them on all Christians under penalty of mortal sin is out of the reach of the church.

I highly reccommend reading the informal debate. The links above are to the start posts of the debate.

Finally!!!!!

Posted by Cory Tucholski on April 10, 2007

Yes, the NIV Quiz is finally up.  Take it with your trusty NIV, or dust off your venerable old KJV.  It is my firm belief that you can pass it with either version, and this article will show you how you can do it, even though the KJV Only Camp doesn’t think you can!

Random Thought…

Posted by Cory Tucholski on April 8, 2007

When I first started blogging on WP, I noticed that all of the comments blocked by Akismet were advertising porn. Then, it went to about 60% porn, 40% prescription drugs. Now, I have almost no porn advertisements whatsoever and almost all of them are for prescription drugs. And the number has jumped from around 20 per day to almost 100 per day.

Does this mean I graduated to the next level of achievement in blogging, or just that I should spend more time writing interesting blogs and articles and less time checking the spam queue?

Speaking of articles: I’m not going to spend any more time with Rook Hawkins’s Problems With the Resurrection piece posted on his blog a few months back. It seems as though 90% of the information is quote-mining from Richard Carrier, and the rest is viewing the historical evidence for the Resurrection with the presupposition that no supernaturalism can ever occur, anywhere, ever.

I still plan to do a piece on the Resurrection, but it will likely be a general apologetic. This will probably take me a while onger than I had originally planned. and I will start on it after I look at some atheist material in-depth. For a preview of how it will likely take shape, check out this apologetic. I want to read Morality Without God from RRS’s deludedgod, and an atheist reader gave me two good articles to look at for general guidelines to arguing with an atheist. I’ve always thought that Pascal’s wager was a terrible way to look at faith, so I’m going to take a look at the wager for myself and likely I’ll publish something on that in the near future.

The King James Only articles are on the brink of finished. The first is the response to that terrible quiz I keep seeing. I only need to locate textual criticism on one more stinking verse, but I can’t seem to find any balanced commentary on 1 Peter 4:14. All I can find is the typical KJV Only rhetoric. The second article I planned on doing was a balanced introduction to the whole KJV Only position, which of course will require more research.

New Stuff!

Posted by Cory Tucholski on March 27, 2007

Rook Hawkins has posted his commentary on the Resurrection (3 months ago… nothing like covering current events!) over on his “Blog of a Critical Historian.”  I’m planning on reviewing that and writing a response to it.  Assuming that there’s anything to actually respond to.

Deludedgod has written an essay about morality in the absence of God, which I will also read and write a response to.  Look for those under the Articles tab soon.

Meanwhile, tomorrow I will begin work on the NIV Quiz that I’m so tired of KJV Onlyists passing around uncritically.  That should hopefully be up by the end of the week.

With the potential of receiving some donation money from church, I also need to work on a ministry outlook for the rest of the year so that I can figure out a budget.  It is really difficult to write, post in forums, work on management tasks, and also work at Burger King.  One might say that I have my hands full compared to others who just do this work full time and don’t have a day job!

On top of all that, I also need to spend time with my wife!  Naturally, this takes priority over everything else.  The sad part is, I don’t get to see her nearly often enough between my work schedule and ministry time.  I miss her.  :(

No, I’m not going to write an article with that last title.  I’m actually going to do that. Just thought I’d clear that one up for the hyper-literalists in the group.

Open Footballism

Posted by Cory Tucholski on February 6, 2007

I have been studying the movements that gain a lot of ground in Christianity these days, and most of these contain aberrant or erroneous theology.  Take this, for example.  So I have decided to attract more people to my ministry, that I am going to need invent and teach a complete heresy.

While watching this year’s Superbowl, I was struck with the perfect heresy for me to perpetuate.  As the book of Ecclesiastes declares, rather than start fresh I will combine my own favorite heresies: papal infallibility, open theism, KJV Onlyism, and Latter Rain theology.  In five-fold fashion, I will therefore declare myself the first apostle, called by the will of Jesus Christ, to lay the foundation of Open Footballism.

Open Footballism is the belief that God divinely inspired the original writers of the NFL rulebook to create His game of choice from the foundation of the world: football.  Even though the college rules came first, the later NFL rules are the only truly divinely inspired version of the game’s rules, and anyone who follows college rules or teaches that those are better are part of the Alexandrian Cult.  College rules are corrupted by Satan’s minions, along with the NIV, the NASB, and NASCAR.

To make the game more exciting, God, in His divine providence, has chosen to not know the outcome or progression of the game prior to it being played.  From this, it also flows that He chose not to know any player trades, head coach hirings/firings, front office moves, or why the Lions suck so badly.  Football is truly the domain of human free will and choice, and God only watches it for His enjoyment.  And He routes for (dramatic pause) da Bears!  (Everyone raise your beer mugs and repeat: “DA BEARS!”)

But in order that football rules are properly interpreted, God has chosen that those officials with the white hats, the Referees, will possess Referee Infallibility during the game.  By the guidence and protection of the Holy Spirit, the Referee is unable to teach error regarding faith and … sorry! … fumbles and pass interference calls.  And any other such rule interpretation that may be called for by a coach’s challenge.

I will, of course, begin missionary journeys to Corinth, Phillippi, Thessolonica, and other such locales to set up churches and teach Open Footballism using my new status as apostle.  I will continue to pray for words from Jesus to expound on the doctrine already contained within this blog entry.

Scriptural support for this is pending.
